Introduction

When you get a wound on your skin, your body repairs the damage naturally. How your body heals this injury depends on how deeply the wound penetrates your skin. If the injury occurred on the top layer of your skin, you’ll likely develop new skin during the healing process. When the damage is deeper than the first layer, your body produces a tissue that’s thicker than your regular skin. This thicker tissue is called scar. the aging process occurs.

What is a scar?

A scar is a fibrous tissue that replaces the injured skin with normal skin. Scars result from the biological repairing process that happens on the skin, as well as in other tissues and organs of the body. Hence, scarring is a natural healing process. Except for very minor lesions, every injury results in some degree of scarring.

What causes scarring?

The common causing factors of scars include surgery, injury, and infection. The scarring process starts with the formation of tissue that appears red, raised, and hard, but over time it flattens, fades, and softens. Based on the person's skin type, the type of injury, and the depth of the wound, this scarring process takes months.

What is Scar Correction?

Scar correction is a type of procedure that is performed to reduce the appearance and to improve the condition of a scar anywhere on your body. This process corrects skin changes (disfigurement) caused by an injury, poor healing, wound, or previous surgery. It also restores the function of the skin

What are the types of Scars?

The different types of scars are as follows:

Surface Irregularities: Surface irregularities or discolourations are more like subtle scars that can be improved by cosmetic treatments or surgery considering various factors. These types of scars do not cause any physical discomfort or impact any functions of the skin.

Hypertrophic Scars: These scars are thick clusters of scar tissue that develop on the wounded skin. They can be hyperpigmented, darker in colour or hypopigmented. They are raised, uncomfortable and may become broader over time.

Keloids: These scars are larger than the hypertrophic scars. They develop more commonly in the site where there is little underlying fatty tissue, say on the face, neck, chest, ears, or shoulders. The scars can be painful or itchy. And they extend beyond the edges of an original incision or wound.

Contractures: These types of scars restrict movement due to skin and underlying tissue pulled together during the healing process. Contracture scars happen when there is a large amount of tissue loss, like in the case of a burn. These scars can occur where an injury crosses a joint, restricting movement of the knees, elbows, fingers, or neck.
